Parental Empowerment & Convergence Dialogue

Multimedia Ratings Reference Guide

In the digital media home of today parents need help understanding their parental control options. Digital convergence has meant that the lines separating various types of media platforms are blurring. Indeed, convergence has made the average home entertainment center capable of receiving and playing several types of media with different ratings systems all on one screen.

A reference guide for parents.

In order to make meaningful choices about youth content in the home, parents need a coherent resource that helps them recognize and understand the various media ratings in relation to one another. While the respective media industries have made efforts to promote their own ratings systems, in isolation these efforts lack the impact of a coordinated, coherent multi-media education campaign.

In our efforts to help parents deal with the dawning of multimedia convergence, the Internet Education Foundation has started developing a Multimedia Ratings Reference Guide. This guide is in draft form and we are actively working to complete it.
